L3-U3-P3-1 Listening : Harry’s Business Trip 1哈里的商务旅行 (出差)

Harry is on a business trip. 哈里在出差。

Yesterday he was supposed to fly from San Francisco to Shanghai. 昨天,他本应从旧金山飞往上海。

However, things didn’t turn out the way they were supposed to. 然而,事情并没有像预期的那样发展。

In fact, nothing went the way it was supposed to. 事实上,一切都不像预期的那样。

Everything went wrong and he didn’t get on his flight. 一切都出了问题,他没上飞机。

As a result, he is still in San Francisco. 因此,他仍在旧金山。

The following is a summary of what happened. 下面是对发生的事情的总结。

Yesterday morning he got up as usual and had breakfast. 昨天早上他像往常一样起床吃早餐。

Everything seemed to be fine and he was looking forward to the trip. 一切似乎都很好,他期待着这次旅行。

He was just about to check out of his hotel when he felt a pain. 他正要离开旅馆,突然感到一阵疼痛。

It was a pain in his lower back. 他的下背部很痛。

It was a dull pain at first -- not too bad. 一开始是隐隐作痛——不算太严重。

So he didn’t worry about it and checked out of the hotel. 所以他没有担心,就退了房。

Then he got on the shuttle bus to the airport. 然后他上了班车去机场。

About halfway to the airport, the pain in his back started to get worse. 在去机场的半路上,他的背痛开始加重。

It was a growing pain, and he was beginning to worry. 疼痛越来越厉害,他开始担心起来。

Soon it was difficult for him to sit in his seat. 很快他就坐不住了。

The pain was getting worse. 疼痛越来越厉害。

He wanted to lie down. 他想躺下。

He started to sweat and breathe quickly. 他开始出汗,呼吸急促。

He was in real pain then. 他当时真的很痛苦。

On a scale of 1 to 10, the pain was an 8. 从1到10,疼痛程度是8。

When the bus got to the airport, the bus driver helped him get off. 当巴士到达机场时,巴士司机帮他下了车。

It was difficult for him to walk, but he finally made it to the terminal. 他走路很困难,但最后还是走到了终点站。

Inside the terminal, he went to the men’s bathroom. 在候机楼里,他去了男厕所。

He went to the toilet, but that didn’t help. 他上了厕所,但没用。

Instead of improving, he felt dizzy, and he threw up. 他非但没有好转,反而感到头晕,还呕吐了。

By now he was wet from all his sweating. 到现在他已经汗流浃背了。

He knew he couldn’t get on his flight. 他知道他上不了飞机了。

He used his phone to call the airline. 他用手机给航空公司打了电话。

He explained the situation and cancelled his reservation. 他解释了情况,取消了预定。

Then he called 911 for emergency help. 然后他打911求救。

911 is the emergency number to call for help in the United States. 911是在美国求救的紧急号码。

An ambulance arrived about ten minutes after he called. 大约十分钟后,一辆救护车赶到了。

By then he was in so much pain that he could barely walk. 那时他疼痛难忍,几乎走不动。

Once inside the ambulance, they gave him oxygen to help him breathe. 一进入救护车,他们就给他供氧以帮助他呼吸。

But the pain was still terrible. 但是疼痛仍然很厉害。

Then they drove him to a hospital near the airport. 然后他们开车把他送到机场附近的一家医院。

Luckily, the hospital was on his health plan. 幸运的是,医院在他的健康计划中。

That means his health insurance is supposed to pay for everything. 也就是说他的医疗保险应该支付一切费用。

Medical costs in the United States are very high. 美国的医疗费用非常高。

When he arrived at the hospital, he was taken to the emergency room. 当他到达医院时,他被送到了急诊室。

After some tests, a doctor told him he had a kidney stone. 经过一些检查,医生告诉他患有肾结石。

It was a very small stone, but it caused a lot of pain. 这是一块很小的石头,但却造成了很大的疼痛。

It was passing through a small tube in his body, from his kidney to his bladder. 它通过他体内的一根小管子,从他的肾脏到膀胱。

The pain would go away once it got to his bladder. 疼痛一到膀胱就会消失。

Until then, he had to take pain medicine to reduce the pain. 在那之前,他不得不服用止痛药来减轻疼痛。

Harry didn’t have to stay at hospital for very long. 哈里没有在医院呆太久。

With the pain medicine, the pain went away very quickly. 吃了止痛药,疼痛很快就消失了。

He took a taxi back to his hotel and checked in for another night. 他乘出租车回到旅馆,登记入住,又住了一夜。

Then he called the airline and made a reservation for another flight. 然后他打电话给航空公司,预订了另一个航班。

The flight will leave tomorrow. 飞机明天起飞。

Until then, he’ll just rest in his hotel. 在那之前,他只能在酒店里休息。

There may even be a good movie to watch. 甚至可能有一部好电影可以看。

So, when you’re traveling, please be prepared for emergencies.所以,当你旅行的时候,请做好应急准备。

Make sure you have medical insurance. 确保你有医疗保险。

You never know when something like this can happen to you. 你永远不知道什么时候会发生这样的事情。

L3-U3-P3-3 Vocabulary : Sources of Energy能源

Solar energy is one of the cleanest and most plentiful sources of energy. 太阳能是最清洁、最丰富的能源之一。

Solar power depends on sunlight, so in cloudy weather and at night, no power is generated. 太阳能依靠阳光,所以在多云的天气和晚上,没有电力产生。

Wind energy is non-polluting, but it’s only useful in places where there is a lot of wind. 风能是无污染的,但它只在风多的地方有用。

Wind turbines convert the kinetic energy of the

wind into mechanical power. 风力涡轮机把风能转换成机械能。

Nuclear energy is efficient and doesn’t produce carbon gases as a waste product. 核能是一种高效的能源,而且不会产生碳气体。

The dangers of nuclear power include deadly radioactive waste products. 核能的危险包括致命的放射性废料。

A major source of energy comes from the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal and oil. 能源的主要来源是燃烧化石燃料,如煤和石油。

When we burn fossil fuels, waste gases, such as CO2 are produced. 当我们燃烧化石燃料时,会产生二氧化碳等废气。

Fossil fuels remain the largest source of energy for most counties. 化石燃料仍然是大多数国家最大的能源来源。

Hydropower comes from the kinetic energy of falling water. 水力发电来自于落水的动能。

Output is reliable and can be regulated to meet the demand, except during periods of drought. 除干旱期间外,产量可靠,可以调节以满足需求。


L3-U3-P3-4 Vocabulary : Types of Words词类

Here are some different types of words in English. 这里有一些不同类型的英语单词。

Words that are nouns and pronouns are used to represent objects. 名词和代词用来表示物体。

A noun or a pronoun can be a person, an animal or a thing, including an idea. 名词或代词可以是人、动物或事物,包括思想。

Verbs are used to express actions, such as to sit down or stand up. 动词用来表示动作,如坐下或站起来。

We also use verbs to express relationships, such as to love someone or to own something. 我们也用动词来表达关系,例如爱某人或拥有某物。

We use adjectives to describe objects, such as a tall building. 我们用形容词来形容物体,如高楼。

Adjectives are used with nouns and pronouns, but not with verbs. 形容词用于名词和代词,但不用于动词。

We use adverbs to describe actions, such as to run fast or to walk slowly. 我们用副词来形容动作,例如快跑或慢走。

Adverbs express the quality of an action, such as how well or poorly something is done. 副词表示一个动作的质量,例如某件事做得有多好或做得有多差。

We use conjunctions to connect things or actions, such as to read and write. 我们用连词来连接事物或动作,例如读和写。

Conjunctions include words such as and, or, because, but and yet. 连词包括单词,例如和,或者,因为,但是,和然而。


L3-U3-P3-5 Dialogue : Good News & Bad News好消息和坏消息

W: Hey, I've got some news, some good news and some bad news. 我有一些消息,一些好消息和一些坏消息。

M: OK, give me the bad news first. 好吧,先告诉我坏消息。

W: We're moving to a new office. 我们要搬到一个新办公室。

M: When is this going to happen? 什么时候会搬?

W: We're supposed to move at the end of next month. 我们应该在下个月底搬家。

M: How far away is the new office? 新办公室有多远?

W: We are not sure yet, but it will mean a longer commute for most of us.我们还不确定,但对我们大多数人来说,这意味着通勤时间更长。

The new office will probably be on the other side of the city. 新办公室很可能在城市的另一头。

M: The commute is already too long for me and I’m not going to change flats. 对我来说通勤时间已经太长了,我不打算换公寓。

M: Anyway. What’s the good news? 反正要搬。有什么好消息?

W: The good news is that we're going to expand. 好消息是我们要扩张了。

M: Well, I’ve got some news for you too. 我也有消息要告诉你。

W: I hope it’s good news. 我希望是好消息。

M: Well, that depends on your point of view. 那要看你怎么看了。

I’m planning to start my own business.我打算自己创业。

W: Why? I thought you were happy working here? 为什么?我以为你在这里工作很开心呢?

M: I like the work, but I’m not learning anything new. 我喜欢这份工作,但我没学到什么新东西。

I think I can do better on my own. 我觉得我自己能做得更好。

M: I was planning to wait a few months. 我本来打算等几个月。

But now that the office is moving, I’m already to make the change.但现在办公室要搬走了,我已经准备好改变了。

W: What does your wife think? 你妻子怎么想?

M: She is in favor of it and she’ll help me.她赞成,她会帮我的。

She’s already designing a website. 她已经在设计一个网站了。

We’ll work from home at first.我们先在家工作。

W: So you really are serious about this. 所以你是认真的。

You're taking a big risk. 你在冒很大的风险。

Most new businesses fail.大多数新企业都失败了。

M: Yes, I know.But if I don’t do it now, I never will. 是的,我知道。现在不做,我永远不会。

I’m tired of working for others.但如果我我厌倦了为别人工作。

W: I know what you mean. 我明白你的意思。

M: Don’t tell anyone about this okay? 别告诉任何人,好吗?

It’s still a secret.这还是个秘密。

W: Sure, I won’t say anything to anybody. 当然,我不会跟任何人说的。

I’m sure this will come as a surprise toeveryone.我相信这对每个人来说都是一个惊喜。

M: I’m sure changing offices will also come as a surprise to people. 我相信换办公室对人们来说也会是一个惊喜。

This is exactly why I want to work on my own.这就是我想独立工作的原因。

I don’t like these kinds of surprises.我不喜欢这种惊喜。

W: You’re right about that. 你说得对。

When are you gonna let people know? 你打算什么时候让大家知道?

M: I’ll make the announcement at the beginning of next month.我将在下月初宣布。
