council

Word forms: plural councils

  • (countable noun) A council is a group of people who are elected to govern a local area such as a city or, in Britain, a county.

  • If you describe the way that someone behaves as confrontational, you are showing your disapproval of the fact that they are aggressive and likely to cause an argument and dispute.
    So you feel you might be a little bit confrontational.

What Gives?

  • It's a way to express frustration, when you say 'What Gives?', you mean you don't know why whatever happens, happened.
    My computer crashed again, what gives?
    The thing is this phrase is not actually a question, you don't need to answer it, and sometimes it can be a kind of confrontational sounding, but I think it's ok.

I don't get it

  • I think it's same as 'What Gives' to some extent, the difference is 'What Gives' might be a little bit confrontational, the other one is kind of a victim mentality.

    It's just one of those words that got so many negative connotations.

implication
