What is he doing?
Laying the brick, building a wall. Yes, that's right!
Millions of workers are doing this everyday, it's their job. Just like us, we're doing our job everyday. We're no difference in this aspect.
If you ask the worker, " You work so hard, what's in it for you?"
Worker A answered- "I am doing the job, for the bread and money, to feed myself and my family. " Very good!
Worker B answered- "I am doing this, beyond bread and money, I have my own goal, to be a master in my work, because I like doing this and I am very good at it. I will be a master sooner or later."
I used to be a person like worker B. When I started my first job in Lucent, my goal is to be the top 10 expert of a product. I worked hard for it and achieved my goal in only 3 years.
The reason is, my product was phased out and only 8 engineers left. I am the top 8! What's in it for me!
I understood being a technical expert was not good enough. So I started to work on my soft skills and aimed to be a good manager. After putting together several people like me, it's not difficult to meet the KPI and deliver high performance result, i could do it every year, I did become a good manager but I still didn't know what's in it for me! I wasn't happy at all.
One year ago, I attended ALU TM club meeting as a guest. I heard there was a kind of club called dying club. but what I saw was even worse, there were only 4 people doing all the roles, no prepared speech and sometimes it was just canceled with a reason "I am busy".
Can it be worse?
Yes! After I joined, half of them were gone! By June 30, 2016, there were12 members, but only 3 active members still attending the meeting regularily, all 3 of us became the club officer to fit the 7 officer role while others were leaving the club one by one....
Can it be worse?
Yes! The other two active members also left the club later... by Dec 31, 2016, 9 of the 12 original members left, only myself with 2 other inactive member who could join meeting once a month, at most.
Can it be worse? No!
Because We have new members joined! That's where the new chapter starts. We had the first member meeting in the little forest across the road of our company, that's also when and where we had our first officer meeting. That's where everything starts - 7 active members, became the officers.
We worked as a team, studied each officer's role by manual and on line trainings, we took every role seriously and backed up each other readily. The club was re-built by this team, hand in hand, brick by brick. During the process, we challenged ourselves,we supported each other, along the way we surprised ourselves by achieving things we could never believed we could do.
Jessie SAA, surprised R&D manager, saying after knowing Jessie for so many years, never saw Jessie such a shining star in public.
Carol, secretary, attracted many fans after the area and division contest, changed herself from a so- called mid-aged woman to a godness.
George, VPM, became a totally different person, from a silent shy engineer to a king of wechat joker, a humorous and influential man.
Danny, VPPR, became a real leader, even found his dreamed goal after seeing muhammad in beijing summit.
Belinda, Treasurer, became the shining queen on the stage, and a productive fisher in the life, caught several big fishes for club.
Lisa, VPE, became a confident lady singing beautiful songs, making impossible things happen.
I am so happy to see all the changes everyone is making week by week. I am the one who benefit the most.
I was inspired by every bit of everyone's progress, to get the strength to overcome the things I could never imagin. From everyone, I felt a sincere pursuit toward something, something we can only find in what we're doing.
Over the past 5 minths, we had 13 new members, we also made our debut on the division and district stage, even the district stage. Everyone has achieved things that we couldn't ever imagin, the things we couldn't do on our own.
Now back to this picture.
Together we're laying the bricks one by one. If you ask "why do you work so hard as officer? what's in it for you?" I had the 3rd answer - Sorry, we're not laying the bricks, we're building -----------a grand cathedral.
Something nobody can do it alone, but together we make it possible, hand in hand, brick by brick.
I see sth. in the bricks, I see sth. in you, but you never know what's in it for you unless you're part of it.
