Today is Tuesday.
The dogs loved Sarah first. Sarah picked up the shells she had carried from her home one by one and told us, "A scallop, a sea clam, an oyster, a razor clam."She told us if we put a conch shell to our ear, we could hear the sea. But we couldn't. Neither did Sarah. Caleb stuck himself to Sarah all day long. Sarah was going to pick colorful plants and dry them for keeping their color for winter. Together we picked flowers, Indian paintbrush, clover and prairie violets. We hung the flowers from the ceiling and I told her we called it Bribe's Bonnet. Sarah had never known that. She told us they had seaside goldenrod, wild asters and woolly ragwort. Caleb whooped. We ate the stew made by Sarah and the bread made by Papa for supper. Sarah cut hairs for Caleb and Papa. She tied my hairs like her. She told us something about her brother. And she sang us a song we had never heard, Sumer is Icumen in. She told us she had touched a real seal. Caleb wanted to touch it at that moment, so did Sarah. She sighed and sang the song again. Far off in a field, a meadowlark sang, too.
