This article is written by Lorna Earl and Steven Katz,including four parts,why change classroom assessment,classroom assessment and societal change,the effects of classroom assessment on learning,quality in classroom assessment.
The main idea is with statement of develop process of classroom assessment, the author views that traditional assessment has been challenged by cognitive science and construct understanding,which put forwards formative assessment and summative assessment,making rather positive effects of classroom assessment on learning ,if teachers’ professional judgement is of great quality.
Firstly,it is the necessity of changing classroom assessment.As society changes ,every discipline changes,so does education,especially for class assessment including the new insights of the cognitive science into nature of learning, constructing understanding about learning and the way to motivating students ' learning.
Secondly,it is the changing process of classroom assessment when social changes,the focus varied greatly from making decisions and providing information for parents to know about their children’ learning firstly,then ensuring fair opportunities for students to paying attention to the teaching process ,till now preparing for tomorrow’s world.
Thirdly,the ways of making the effects of classroom assessment includes intentional use of assessment that the teacher knowing the students 'prior knowledge and monitor the changing as instruction procceds and the encouraging to students to think about their own learning and review and challenge what they know.Meanwhile,classroom assessment on students’ metacognitive experience is of great value,which helps them establish relationship of knowledge from emergent to proficient.All of these activities will benefit both teachers and students.
Last but not least,it states that classroom assessment involves complex processes requiring teachers’ professional judgment,including four basic principles such as reliability,reference points,validity,and record keeping.
