地道英语表达|weekend warrior
Hey, what's up? How's your weekend? Are you a weekend warrior?
「weekend warrior」
周末花大量时间和精力做一件事的人,或周末有副业的人
If you play hard on the weekend, you are a weekend warrior. So, a warrior is a fighter. More specifically, it’s someone who fights with some level of skill and intensity. If someone says ‘I’m a weekend warrior’, that means I do that thing very intensely on the weekend.
This can also be used for someone who has these day what it called ‘side hustle’(副业). If you have a full time job during the week, but you also have a side business you are getting started and you only work on that business during weekend. You can say that ‘Oh, I’m not with this full time yet, or I’m not working on this project full time, I am just a weekend warrior right now.
So, the thing you are doing doesn’t have to be a hobby, it can also be a work endeavor. I think anything that you are doing that you do passionately and you do seriously, but you just can’t commit to doing it full time and you can only dedicate a little bit of time to it each week, then we can use this expression.
Example I
A: What are you doing this weekend?
B: I’m going hiking.
A: Again? Didn’t you just do that last weekend?
B: Yeah, man. I’m a real weekend warrior. I try to go outside and hike as often as possible.
A: Cool.
So, in this example, we see a weekend warrior who likes to go hiking as often as possible. In Canada, there are a lot of hiking weekend warriors. It’s very popular and common pastime (消遣)here. And because of that, I actually try to avoid to the mountains on the weekends. Because there are too many weekend warriors climbing the hill, and the trails are busy. And that lead us to our next example.
Example II
A: It will be a lot fun to play golf around here if all the weekend warriors would tone it down.
B: Right, none of us are professionals, why do they have to take it so seriously?
A: That’s a good question. It’s too competitive around here. I just want to take it easy and relax, you know.
In this example, we see the expression weekend warriors to describe weekend golfers who take the game so seriously. The speak is saying that the golfer is playing too hard, and they act like they are professionals. And they should not, because it is the weekend when people should relax and have fun.
We see another great expression in this example which is ‘tone it down’. This means to stop taking themselves so seriously, or stop being so intense. I use this expression all the time. If somebody is angry at me, which doesn’t happen all the time I should clarify but when it does, I could be like ‘come down’ or ‘tone it down a little’.
