The Great racing driver, Sir Malcolm Campbell, was the first man to drive at over 300
miles per hour. In september 1935, he set up a new world record at Bonnelvill Salt Flats, Utah. He was driving a car called Bluebird which had been specially built for him.
Equipped with a 2,500 horsepower engine, the car was over 30 feet in length. At first,
because of a burst tyre, Campell had a trouble in controlling the car during the first run. And then he was told that his average speed had been 299 miles per hour. A few days
later, he was informed that his average speed had been 301 miles per hour. Since then, racing drivers have reached speeds of over 600 miles an hour. Like his father, Sir
Malcom's son, Donald, also set up a world record in his car named Bluebird.
