Part 5

C: Wow, Xiangwei, so you did have a very rich career path with 20 plus years across industries, functions, and also continents especially, the very solid track record in both functional and leadership positions, which you are proud of yourself. But in the same time, you are also a world citizen. You’ve lived and worked in numerous locations. So, how is this experience, and how does it give you the different perspectives of the world and your life?

XW: I think… that’s a big question. When I was young, I read a lot from this novelist, writer, San Mao. Probably my whole generation got inspired by her, her life story, and her writing. And she went very far, she traveled the world, and saw the world, and then presented the world through her lens and her writing. I was very inspired by that. I always wanted to see the world. So, and … yeah, so that’s part of me. I always wanted to go to see different places of the world. And then I always wanted to do something also with what I saw, and what I experienced. It’s an amazing feeling. It made me feel free… I feel free. I feel, again, like I said, there is no boundary inside of me, in a way. I feel very free, at this stage of my life.

XW: It’s actually amazing, being a world citizen is great. But what’s really great is that I also feel home everywhere I go to. So, when I was young I always wanted to go far to see the world and travel to different places. But, on this journey, sometimes you get lost, you will start to question where am I and why am I doing this and where is home to me. But then you continue. And eventually you arrive at a place. I’m not talking about a physical place but really mentally, and also in your heart. You feel like, wow, actually the world has more similarities. The different places or countries or cultures have more similarities than differences actually, because at the end of the day we are all the world citizens in a way, the Earth citizens. We have just one mother Earth, and there is soil everywhere, there is land everywhere. So in that sense, I discovered I can feel home everywhere. I can find connection with every culture everywhere. So it feels great.

C: It helps with your work, too.

XW: Yes, it helps with my work. Because we work in a global environment, and who does the work? And it’s people. So whether people are Americans or Europeans or Africans, Chinese, Japanese,... I always find nowadays easy to build connection, build connection with these people, no matter where they come from.

C: Wow. ... One more question to you, since you are here, we would like to have your insights or observations regarding women in the workplace in China?

XW: I probably can only say anecdotally… I’m not really an expert in that regard. It’s a real paradox, you know, we have heard that eighty or eighty-five percent of the world’s self-made female billionaires are from China, so more than the rest of the world combined. It happens in China, so that’s great and very inspiring. On the other hand, you also see a lot of other things that are maybe not as, you know, not as satisfactory, especially at the grassroots level. So you’ll see successful self-made billionaires more than any other place in the world. But you also see still a lot of struggles of women, and they are lost, ... and they are the single child generation, they are burdened with a lot of social pressure and pressure of taking care of the family and how to balance everything... and they are lacking role model. Nobody is showing them a clear path to follow, or how to walk the path.

I also don't know how to really address this topic.

C: That’s OK. Because When we talk about women’s leadership, I always say there are three lines, one is time -line, it takes some time; and one is bottom-line, so when more women are educated, and also, you know, employed, and developed, the companies and countries are richer. And another line is story-line. So Thank you so much for sharing the story line with us.

So, lastly, we would like you to give some words or best wishes for China Women and Diversity Talk. As this is the best timing, or perfect timing we can try to eliminate the false feelings and noises about men and women across the country. And we can also, you know, learn from each other so much, and also globally with other women in the world.
