What started off as a normal social media profile like anyone else, became a viral account in no time. Gavin created his profile on Weibo, the Chinese equivalent to social media platform Twitter, and hit jackpot right away after gaining an astonishing 1.8 million followers, and counting, according to a report by CNN. On Twitter, he has ‘just’ 550,000 followers.
It all started off after videos of baby Gavin with his uncle Nick Mastodon became an instant hit online back home in the US. Born in Minnesota, and in elementary school right now, Gavin facial expressions became an instant hit, so much so that his expressions became used in memes and GIFs.
“A GIF of Gavin’s face where he is seen smiling awkwardly might be getting used as many as 10 million times per day across China’s various social media platforms,” Ann Ding, founder and CEO of Dongtu.com, a big distributor of online GIFs, told CNN. He is more popular in China than in the US, she added.
