University of Cambridge confirms it accepts Gaokao test results
People's Daily Online
The University of Cambridge confirmed that it would accept students based on Gaokao test results in a post on the University's official Weibo account on March 25.
confirm
1) 表示“证实(陈述或建议的事物)”,英文解释为“If you confirm something that has been stated or suggested, you say that it is true because you know about it.”
The spokesman confirmed that the area was now in rebel hands.
2) confirm可以与as连用 表示“证明(某人是当之无愧的…)”,英文解释为“If something confirms you as something, it shows that you definitely deserve a name, role, or position.”
Her new role could confirm her as one of our leading actors.
The Gaokao, China's notoriously difficult university entrance exam, is now accepted by a number of overseas universities including the University of New Hampshire, which last year became the first state university in the US to accept Gaokao scores for new admissions, and the University of Western Australia.
notoriously
这个词带有很强烈的贬义色彩,由形容词notorious转变而来,表示“声名狼藉;臭名昭著”,英文解释为“To be notorious means to be well known for something bad.”
The train company is overstaffed and notoriously inefficient.
He worked mainly in New York City where living space is notoriously at a premium.
Previously, Chinese students would have to take standardized college admission tests, such as the SAT and ACT used in US schools. However, to take these examinations in China is costly, and means only the rich families had the opportunity to send their children to study overseas.
The Economist last year reported that the University of Cambridge also belonged on the list of universities starting to accept the Gaokao, and after a myriad of emails asking for confirmation recently, the university took to Weibo and its website to issue a statement verifying the decision.
a myriad of
表示“大量;各种各样”,也可以用myriads of表示,“A myriad or myriads of people or things is a very large number or great variety of them.”
They face a myriad of problems bringing up children.
Myriad /ˈmɪrɪəd/也可以充当单个的形容词,表示“大量的;各种各样的”,英文解释为“having a large number or great variety.”
The magazine has been celebrating pop in all its myriad forms.

a plethora of
plethora /ˈplɛθərə/ 表示“过多(过量)某事物”,英文解释为“a plethora of sth formal a very large number of something, usually more than you need”,如:a plethora of suggestions 一大堆建议。
verify
1) 表示“核实”,英文解释为“If you verify something, you check that it is true by careful examination or investigation.”
I verified the source from which I had that information.
2) 表示“证实”,英文解释为“If you verify something, you state or confirm that it is true.”
The government has not verified any of those reports.
a statement verifying the decision
Although the news was met with many positive comments online, many netizens noted that it would still be challenging to get into Cambridge, even if they did manage to score in the top 0.1 percent.
“I am a student that Cambridge University will never get,” one user joked, while another wrote, “On my way to Tsinghua, I lost a number of rivals.”
