I only realized it was the last day of Lady A’s reading class when One-one told me I ought to submit an end-of-the-term class review. Time indeed flies by fast when the days are filled with meaningful activities.
Lady A heading up the class was the reason I signed up: her writing class prior to this shed light on the cracks in my own writing skills - lack of variation in the sentence structure and a bleak vocabulary. Each of the topics we were asked to write on came up a new challenge there. Hence after that series of mental workout, I didn’t hesitate to sign up when I saw she launched the reading class. For sure I was not disappointed in the rigorousness of the training: a wide coverage of materials from law and government, to environment and resources and then to taxation runs through only 28 days, yet I was able to get a basic grip in each of these fields with intense effort she inspired us into.
Such learning efficacy owe thanks to Lady A’s thoughtful selection of materials as well as her patient guiding. From the Economist, New York Times and the Wal-Street Journal to a big-volume academic thesis, she really gleaned far and wide to put together a well-rounded assortment of articles for us to read. Being exposed to a range of article lengths flipped my previous concept: long articles are not necessarily hard to understand while short ones may demand more digging. I also learned to comb through the fabric of the article by looking for connections across different paragraphs, parsing out the tie between evidence and argument and trying to grasp the central thread of logic. Actually, I was happy to see my progress - from crowding too much details into the mind-maps, to eventually coming up with simple but clear illustrations.
Annie is patient in the way she answers questions and interact with students in the discussion group everyday. And she is methodical - infusing knowledge in the beginning yet gradually revving up our own engines so we could find answers on our own. Sometimes following her instructions on one point could take you to a waterfall of realizations. Through compiling questions and answers everyday as the prefect, I noticed that on the days of general reading, questions concerning comprehension of the content took up the biggest portion while on the days of close reading, lady A would speak more on critical thinking and give background knowledge. In the last week, lady A even tried to get us to find answers ourselves to our own questions in the provided materials. Interactive teaching and learning does wonders.
I applied to serve as the class prefect but honestly I don’t think I did a perfect job- I could have tried harder to take off more loads from Lady A’s shoulder. Regrets aside, I am grateful for the opportunity to do some service to our class and to get to know so many wonderful fellow students. I hope to see you all in the next program.
I want to conclude with a wish for more successes to Gambition. Hope Lady A could whip up another class or a few new classes, and I would most definitely sign up for them!

Gambition, well, hold on, you probably don’t know what that is.What I can tell you is, this thingy, this mysterious “place”, is where many memorable moments happened. I click on “clock out”, for the 28th time in this month, while it suddenly occurs to me that I have completed another Gambition class -is it the eighth one I have gone through? Actually this entire term has been dedicated to studying at Gambition, with my mind totally engrossed in the kaleidoscope Gambition coaches laid out before us. In this one that I just “graduated” from, I was once again swept off my feet by Lady A’s exquisite learning design.
I used to hate reading as the pages would be filled with eye sores - blotches of“new words”, which I can’t bring myself to get along with. So I signed up for Annie’s reading class thinking I could use some instructions but didn’t know what I got myself into... For someone that once would cringe at the thought of reading through any The Economist article, now reading The Economist is just a leisure activity, oh Lady A, how did you do it? What kind of ordeal you have put us through... There were 15-page long New Yorker articles, Wal-Street Journal articles and recently even a 150-page long thesis! You never run out of things to be intimidated by in Lady A’s class, so after 28 days of living with her whip swooshing across your back to push you to work faster and better, you got into formidable shape intellectually, on the premise that you hadn’t died already.. Lady A is actually quite a character : can you imagine she laughs at her own jokes while giving a lecture on tape? Andonce in a while, she acts like a little kid. I could sense her passion for the language though. Besides, she is always there whenever we have questions.
Lady A, a powerful lady, cracking her whip to “beat” you out of your slack, so you would read actively and with initiatives, so you would think harder on the inner logic and the structure of each article instead of just fiddle with words. Even a slothful person like me, has picked up the habit of considering the intent of the author and the design behind each literary set up, after much work(forced work) in drawing mind-maps(although mine don’tlookthat great..). I was opened up to a wider range of perspectives and my horizon was definitely expanded. I think that is because Lady A does a lot of coaching work, in order to show us the way to solve problems independently, as opposed to just dumping the “right” answers on us.
I really enjoy this place and love Lady A.For the next class coming up I am gunning to be the first one to sign up!

Lady Awas the trainer for the Reading class this month. Somehow after last month’s writing class led by Lady A that nudged me out of my comfort zone, I grew a bit of anticipation toward the subsequent reading class, even though rumor had it tobeeven more a torture chamber(I got poisoned..)
It turned outrumor had it right:Lady A was considered lenient in the prior writing class compared with this class. With writing, you got a bit of wiggle room to whip up stuff out of your head, whereas with reading, you were bound by the mind-mapping framework Lady A introduced to you. You had to think very hard, to delve deeply into the structure of the articles, squeeze main ideas out of lengthy narratives and extract the big picture out of a sea of details. Gradually, you grow to be a serious reader, not just scanning through pieces in a hit and miss manner - with no apparent purpose before going in and no clue where to dig deeper, but learning to pick apart the content and put together the underlying theme.
But there is never a free lunch - good things come with a price. For example, the week of reading on American politics, completely overwhelmed me : faced by a New Yorker article of over 10 pages long, I felt the unfamiliar words were simply staring me down.. And that was during my vacation in Lhasa when I was suffering from altitude sickness, under Tibet’s blue sky dappled with white clouds which really contrasted with the rainy space in my mind.. But just like your body could get used to the altitude eventually, your mind also self adjusts in its capacity to swallow a lengthy article from The Economist.
Of course I reaped more than that, since having a good thinking habit established unlocks the building of many other skills, for example, our ability to re-verbalize information without note-taking, as you can now weave points into a cohesive map in your head instead of trying to memorize scattered pieces.
This is pretty much what I got to say. Oh, by the way, Lady A is a head-sheep type of coach: she would not only steer us to go forward with her all-inclusive spoken exposition recorded for almost every article, but also run alongside us, cheering us on.
I heard Lady A would start a grammar class, so what new places is that going to take us? hmm..
