1 Reward and Punishment Superresponse Tendency
(1)people often underestimate the importance of incentive.
case:the Federal Express case, Xerox case, Mark Twain's cat
Ben Franklin Poor Richard's Almanack:"If you would persuade, appeal to interest and not to reason
Never, ever, think about something else when you should be thinking about the power of incentives
The most important rule in management: Get the incentives right.
(2) There is a limit to the emphasis on incentive superpower.
case:B.E Skinner, Blanchard "man-with-a-hammer tendency"
"To a man with only a hammer every problem looks pretty much like a nail"
consequence: incentive-caused bias, a decent man, driven both consciously and subconsciously by incentives, may drift into immoral behavior in order to get what he wants, a result he facilitates by rationalizing his bad behavior.
Implications: people who create things like cash registers, which make dishonest behavior hard to accomplish, are some of the effective saints of our civilization because bad behavior is intensely habit-forming when it is rewarded.
"repeat behavior that works"
famous quotes: I did not completely die-Roman Poet Horace
" Whose bread I eat, his song I sing"
natual results of incentive-caused bias: agency cost/man tends to "game" all human systems
"Granny's rule" can make you manipulate your own behavior
