Part One 词汇笔记

(题外话:Introduction的内容似曾相识,和安妮口语班的一次练习scientific method基本重合,再次见到reasoning,observation,experiment,thought,empirical evidence blabla莫名亲切,但是已经忘记Galileo Galilei的读音,所以要记得温故而知新。)

1.ongoing  a.

(1)continuing: having been developing or in progress for some time and continuing to do so

(2)occurring now: taking place at the present time

continuing without termination or interruption: #ongoing research projects

Synonyms:evolving, continuous, developing, progressing, unfinished, unfolding


2.write widely on scientific subjects 这里widely用的地道,学习


3.carry out an experiment


4.pick holes in 

criticize, look for errors or faults, nitpick(吹毛求疵)

# Grant won't show you his work because you pick holes in it.

# Hey, I've done nothing wrong. You are trying to pick holes in our work.


5.falsify the theory 

To falsify is to alter or mangle something, like a message or document, in a way that distorts the meaning.*Since false things aren't true, to falsify something is to dishonestly change its meaning. If a friend tells you a story, and then you retell the story but change important facts, you falsified the story. If you lie in court — commit perjury — you're falsifying the facts. Faking someone else's signature is another type of falsifying, as is lying on your resume. Anytime you misrepresent the truth, you're falsifying.*篡改,伪造(文字记录、信息)

词根词缀:

falsify v 篡改,欺骗(fals+ify表动词=弄错=篡改)

fallacy n 错误,谬论(fall+acy)

fallacious a 犯错误的(fall+acious有…的=有错误的)

fallible a 易错的(fail+ible能…的=能犯错误的)

infallible a 无可指责的(in无+fallible=无错误的)

falsehood n虚伪,错误(false错,假+hood 表示状态=假的状态)

falsification n 伪造,曲解(falsify+ic+ation)

failing n 缺点,短处(fail+ing表动名词=错误之处=缺点)

exactly right ;accurate, perfect 完全正确;对极了

correct, bang on, dead on, right on

a positively charged particle that is the nucleus(原子核) of the helium atom(氦原子); emitted from natural or radioactive isotopes(放射性的同位素)

(c.582-c.507 BC), Greek philosopher and mathematician, founder of the Pythagorean school

(文科生只记得勾股定理)


13.supernova 超新星

a star that suddenly becomes much brighter because it is exploding 


14.apparatus 

Your apparatus is the collective equipment you use for specific purposes. For example, the apparatus used for scuba diving includes goggles, flippers, and a breathing tank, while a surgeon’s apparatus includes various scalpels and clamps. Different activities, different apparatuses.

1 = equipment, appliance, contraption (informal), device, gear, machinery, mechanism, tackle, tools

2 = organization, bureaucracy, chain of command, hierarchy, network, setup (informal), structure, system

词根记忆:

(1)器械,器具,仪器;机构,组织

# Having checked the parameters of the apparatus, the paralysed parasite went to the paradise by parachute.检查过仪器的参数後,瘫痪的寄生虫乘降落伞到天堂去了.

(2)仪器,设备(ap+par+atus表名词→准备好用的东西→设备)[par=get ready,表示"准备"]

15. dissect

(1)[with obj.](常作 be dissected)methodically cut up (a body, part, or plant) in order to study its internal parts 解剖 

# anatomical dissection 解剖分析

(2) analyse (a text or idea) in minute detail 仔细分析,剖析 

# Her latest novel was dissected by the critics. 评论家对她最近出版的一部小说作了详细剖析。

(3) to divide sth into smaller pieces, areas, etc. 把…分成小块

# The city is dissected by a network of old canals. 古老的运河网将这座城市分割开来。

(1) (亦作 root something up)dig or pull up a plant by the roots 连根挖,连根拔

(2) find and get rid of someone or something regarded as pernicious or dangerous 根除,铲除,根绝

21. harbour 

verb

(1)[with obj.]keep (a thought or feeling, typically a negative one) in one's mind, especially secretly

心怀,抱有,怀有(想法,感情,尤指消极的想法、感情)

# she started to harbour doubts about the wisdom of their journey. 她开始暗暗怀疑他们此行究竟是否明智。

(2) give a home or shelter to 为…提供住所(或动物栖息地);为…提供庇护

# woodlands that once harboured a colony of red deer. 曾是马鹿群栖息地的林区。

shelter or hide (a criminal or wanted person)  窝藏;收留(罪犯,通缉犯)

# he was suspected of harbouring an escaped prisoner. 他被怀疑收留了逃犯。

23. albeit        [ɔːlˈbiːɪt] conjunction

though虽然,尽管

# he was making progress, albeit rather slowly. 他那时在不断进步,虽然十分缓慢。


24.divert oneself 

(1) [with obj.]cause (someone or something) to change course or turn from one direction to another 使(人,物)改道(或转向)

# a scheme to divert water from the river to irrigate agricultural land. 让河水改道以灌溉农田的计划。

reallocate (something, especially money or resources) to a different purpose 重新分配(某物,尤指金钱或资源)

# more of their advertising budget was diverted into promotions. 他们重新划拨更多的广告预算用于促销。

(2) distract (someone or their attention) from something 将(某人)从某物引开;转移(某人)对某物的注意力

# she managed to divert Rose from the dangerous topic of Lady Usk.她将罗兹的注意力从厄斯克夫人这个危险的话题上转移开。

(3) [usu. as adj. diverting]draw the attention of (someone) away from tedious or serious concerns; entertain or amuse 将(某人)的注意力从冗长乏味或严肃的事上转移开;取悦;使愉快
