Studying abroad generally refers to a person going to a country outside his home country to accept various kinds of education, the time can be short or long (from a few weeks to a few years). These people are called "international students".

The proportion of students studying abroad and returning home dropped from 1.46:1 in 2012 to 1.26/1 in 2016. More than 80 percent of those studying abroad choose to return to China after completing their studies.
