Part one: Inside-out (p39-53)
Words
1. We can see a reality that is superseded by his limited perceptions -- a reality that is as critical for us to understand in our daily lives as it was for the captain in the fog.
If something is superseded by something newer, it is replaced because it has become old-fashioned or unacceptable.
Some hand craft products cannot be superseded by the machine.
2. In the words of Erich Fromm, an astute observer of the roots and fruits of the personality ethic.
If you describe someone as astute, you think they show an understanding of behaviour and situations, and are skilful at using this knowledge to their own advantage.
3. A child learns to turn over, to sit up, to crawl, and then to walk and run. Each step is important and each one takes time. No step can be skipped.
4. The atmosphere in the room was really charged -- the children were crowding around my little daughter with their hands out, ...
If a situation ischarged, it is filled with emotion and therefore very tense or exciting.
highly charged atmosphere...
5. The personality ethic tells me I could take some kind of dramatic action -- shake things up, make heads roll -- that would make my employees shape up and appreciate what they have.
shake something up: Fig.to reorganize a group or organization, not always in a gentle way.
make head roll: To fire or dismiss several employees
Summary
key terms: character, principle,
1. Our Paradigms are the way we “see” the world or circumstances -- not in terms of our visual sense of sight, but in terms of perceiving, understanding, and interpreting. Paradigms are inseparable from character.
2. And what we see is highly interrelated to what we are. We can't go very far to change our seeing without simultaneously changing our being, and vice versa.
3. Paradigms are powerful because they create the lens through which we see the world. The power of a Paradigm Shift is the essential power of quantum change, whether that shift is an instantaneous or a slow and deliberate process.
The more closely our maps or paradigms are aligned with these principles or natural laws, the more accurate and functional they will be. Correct maps will infinitely impact our personal and interpersonal effectiveness far more than any amount of effort expended on changing our attitudes and behaviors.
2. 什么是principle?
Principles are like lighthouses. They are natural laws that cannot be broken. As Cecil B. deMille observed of the principles contained in his monumental movie, The Ten Commandments, “It is impossible for us to break the law. We can only break ourselves against the law.
3. principle
They are self-evident and can easily be validated by any individual. It's almost as if these principles or natural laws are part of the human condition, part of the human consciousness, part of the human conscience. They seem to exist in all human beings, regardless of social conditioning and loyalty to them, even though they might be submerged or numbed by conditions or disloyalty.
principles: fairness, integrity and honesty, human dignity, service, quality, potential
principles不是practices, values,
Principles are guidelines for human conduct that are proven to have enduring, permanent value. They're fundamental. They're essentially unarguable because they are self-evident.
If you want the secondary greatness of recognized talent, focused first on primary greatness of character.
We need a new level, a deeper level of thinking to solve these deep concerns.
四、the new level of thinking 是什么?
这本书就所讨论的主题就是the new level of thinking。
This new level of thinking is what Seven Habits of Highly Effective People is about. It's a principle-centered, character-based, “Inside-Out” approach to personal and interpersonal effectiveness.
“Inside-Out” means to start first with self; even more fundamentally, to start with the most inside part of self -- with your paradigms, your character, and your motives.
To recognize and develop them and to use them in meeting our deepest concerns, we need to think differently, to shift our paradigms to a new, deeper, “Inside-Out” level。
