【熟词生义】

1.skin  v. 

剥去(死动物)的皮;将…去皮 If you skin a dead animal, you remove its skin.

The hunter skinned the rabbit and prepared it for cooking.

2.gut  v.

取出(动物或鱼)的内脏(以备烹饪)When someone guts a dead animal or fish, they prepare it for cooking by removing all the organs from inside it.

It is not always necessary to gut the fish prior to freezing.

3.attached to sb/sth   a.

非常喜欢…的,热爱…的 If you are attached to someone or something, you like them very much. emotionally connected:having strong feelings of affection

I wasn’t exactly devastated about the cats. I don’t think we’d had them long enough for me to get attached; I don’t even remember their names.

She is very attached to her family and friends.

She's quite attached to her cousin. [=she likes her cousin very much]

We both became very attached to the cat.

4.dick

abrasive, mean or behave bad

And cats are dicks for the most part.

Stop being such a dick.

5.put down

杀死(具危险性或生病的动物) When an animal is put down, it is killed because it is dangerous or very ill.

to kill (an animal) in a way that causes it little pain usually because it is injured or sick

He pushed the gate over and it fell on her back and broke her spine. We took her to the vet and she had to be put down.

They had to have their dog put down [=put to sleep] by the vet.

6.scale  v.

爬越;攀登;翻过 If you scale something such as a mountain or a wall, you climb up it or over it.

I heard Panther barking in the backyard, looked out, and there was Fufi, scaling the wall.

The men scaled a wall and climbed down scaffolding on the other side.

【词组】

1.string up

to hang (someone) by the neck:to kill (someone) by hanging

They threatened to string him up in a tree.

2.occur to sb

to be thought of by (someone)

It never occurred to us that she could actually scale a five-foot wall, but that was exactly what was happening.

The thought of giving up never occurred to me.

it occurs to someone that:

3.go up (to...)(from...) 

to go from one place to another, especially further north or to a city or large town from a smaller place

I went up to the gate and rang the doorbell.

When are you next going up to Scotland?

We went up to London last weekend.

4.curse sb out

to say angry and offensive words to (someone)

Of course, since Fufi was deaf she didn’t respond to “Spotty” or “Fufi.” She just stood there. I started cursing the kid out.

My boss cursed me out.

5.lie to sb's face

to lie directly to a person

This lady lied to my mom’s face.

6.gather up

Gather up means the same as gather

When Sutcliffe had gathered up his papers, he went out...

He gathered the leaves up off the ground.

7.live (one's) life to the fullest

The hard thing was understanding that Fufi wasn’t cheating on me with another boy. She was merely living her life to the fullest.

8.feel for sb

to have sympathy or pity for (someone)

They’ll come to me angry and crying and talking about how they’ve been cheated on and lied to, and I feel for them.

feel (deeply) for you, but there's nothing I can do to help.

I really feel for people who suffer from depression.

9.wrestle with [ˈresl]

to try to deal with or solve a difficult problem; to struggle to move, deal with, or control something

I have so many friends who still, as adults, wrestle with feelings of betrayal.

We're wrestling with a recession...

She was wrestling with her luggage as she boarded the plane.

She wrestled with her conscience.[ˈkɑːnʃəns]

We wrestled with the issue/problem of how to cut costs without laying off workers.

10.given

考虑到 If you say given something, you mean taking that thing into account.

考虑到;鉴于If you say given that something is the case, you mean taking that fact into account.

Given the finite number of traits a dog can have, pretty much everyone’s dogs have the same names; people just recycle them.

Given the uncertainty over Leigh's future I was left with little other

choice.
