1. strip

n.

a relatively long narrow piece of something

# he felt a flat strip of muscle

v.

(1) take off or remove

Type of:remove, take, take away, withdraw

(2) ~ sb of sth to take away property or honours from sb, as a punishment 剥夺;褫夺

# He was disgraced and stripped of his title. 他名誉扫地,被取消了头衔。

strip sth↔a'way

1  to remove a layer from sth 剥去;剥下;揭去

# First, you need to strip away all the old plaster. 首先,你得把原来的灰泥全部刮掉。

2 to remove anything that is not true or necessary 揭去,揭穿,清除(虚假或不必要的东西)

# The movie aims to strip away the lies surrounding Kennedy's life.这部电影旨在揭穿有关肯尼迪生平的种种谎言。

2. marvel

~ (at sth) to be very surprised or impressed by sth 感到惊奇;大为赞叹

# Everyone marvelled at his courage. 人人对他的勇气都惊叹不已。

3. recall

[U] the ability to remember sth that you have learned or sth that has happened in the past 记忆力;记性

4. hamper

6. apprehension

Apprehension is fear or anxiety about something – you might feel apprehension about an upcoming test. Apprehension is also the capture of a criminal, when they get apprehended, or caught. It can mean “understand an idea” too.

(1)= anxiety, alarm, concern, dread, fear, foreboding, suspicion, trepidation, worry

 # There is growing apprehension that fighting will begin again.人们愈来愈担心会重开战火。

   He watched the election results with some apprehension. 他不无忧虑地观察选举结果。

7. dismal fact

dismal= gloomy, bleak, cheerless, dark, depressing, discouraging, dreary, forlorn, sombre, wretched

Dismal comes from the Latin dies mali which means "bad days." There is a hopelessness implied in the word. If you fell on the way to school and cut your knee, it would be bad, but not dismal. If you fell into a giant mud puddle and had to wear dirty, crusty clothes until you got home, it might make the school day seem pretty dismal.

The word commission has several very different meanings, but in its most basic meaning, commission is the act of passing a responsibility to someone else. If you receive a government commission, that means you have been assigned a task by the government.Another common meaning of commission is the amount of money an employee earns when they sell something: In addition to his salary, he gets a 1% commission on each sale. A commission is also an order for someone to do something and get paid: The artist received a commission for a new painting to hang in the building lobby. And a commission is a high-ranking position in the armed forces, or a special committee that controls or investigates something.

leaving out or passing over something

= exclusion, failure, lack, neglect, oversight

Omissions can be purposeful or a result of neglect.

# Everyone was surprised at her omission from the squad.她未列入该编组使大家感到惊讶。

10. sloth 树懒;懒惰

a disinclination(reluctance) to work or exert yourself

If you lounge around in your bathrobe watching TV and ordering out for pizza, you'll get called a sloth.Sloth has meant "lazy person" or "laziness" for a long time. In the Catholic Churchslothwas categorized as one of the seven deadly sins.

11. guise VS disguise

No doubt you’ve noticed the similarity between guise and disguise. Both involve the art of deception: it’s the methods that differ.Guise is about trying on new attitudes and mannerisms, such as speaking and acting in the guise of a native in a place where you are actually a tourist. Disguise involves hiding your real identity, disappearing in the new role.

# Owens said he did not want President Trump to deflect an investigation under the guise of respecting son’s sacrifice.

disguise   

 A disguise is something you put on so no one recognizes you. Most of the time we think of a disguise as something you wear, but you can also disguise your feelings.

# She disguised herself as a boy. 她女扮男装。

# It was a thinly disguised attack on the President. 明眼人一下就能看出这是在攻击总统。

# The star travelled in disguise. 这位明星化了装去旅行。

12. liaison

a channel for communication between groups

# We work in close liaison with the police.我们与警方密切配合。

13. call forth

to produce a particular reaction 引起;使产生

# His speech called forth an angry response. 他的发言引起了一阵愤怒。

14. At the mercy ofthose we cannot but hold in contempt. 

# Politicians seem to be generally held in contempt by ordinary people.一般百姓似乎普遍看不起从政者。

15. despise

= look down on, abhor, detest, loathe, revile, scorn

16. consort

v.厮混

# He is known to have consorted with prostitutes.

17. compulsion

n. 

(1) 强迫,强制

# You are under no compulsion to pay immediately.没有人强迫你立刻付款。

# He felt a great compulsion to tell her everything.

18. ludicrous

a. unreasonable; that you cannot take seriously

a ludicrous suggestion 荒谬的建议

19. arouses such disproportionate guilt

= unequal, excessive, inordinate, out of proportion, unbalanced, uneven, unreasonable

# The area contains a disproportionate number of young middle-class families.

此地年轻的中产阶级家庭特别多。

20. specter
