I've always be wanting to improve my reading speed, but don't know how. Thanks Steve Garrity for recommending a great book Breakthrough Rapid Reading.
I just started the book, and still trying to figure out how to get the reading practice into my daily routine.
I evaluated my reading speed. It's at about 224 words per minute (WPM). This number falls into the category of an average reader. I guess for a person whose English is second language, this is pretty good. I hope I can read much faster, since there's so much info to consume every day. I want to be able to quickly get the gist of a book, a magazine, or an article, which I am still struggling with.
One of the biggest issues I have with English reading is backtracking, aka reading what you've already read, because of lack of comprehension. I find myself doing that very often.
This books proposes a solution: read with your finger as a pacer, underneath the line of text you're reading. This way, your finger movement forces you to keep reading forward, not backwards.
By using my hand as a pacer, I was able to get an improved speed at a 20+% increase. Amazing :O. I'm obviously not too used to using my fingers yet, and I wonder how this applies to reading text on computer screens.
I'm sure I will figure out a way.
