PART 1
Numbers
1. Are you good at remembering numbers?
I'm definitely not good at remembering numbers. The thing is, I’ve never been sensitive to numbers and I've got a poor memory. I find remembering numbers really difficult and boring.
2. Do you often use numbers at work or study?
No, I don't. I am a college student and I major in law. What I learn is hardly related to numbers so I do not deal with numbers in my study.
3. What is you favorite number?
My favorite number is definitely eight. In my culture, this number represents fortune, and who doesn’t like money, right?
4. Do numbers have special meanings in your country?
Yes, they do. Actually, Chinese people are pretty superstitious. In our traditions, many numbers have special meanings. For instance, the number 6 is considered auspicious because it symbolizes good luck.
Cakes
1. Do you like sweet food?
Yes, I do. I especially love chocolate. Whenever I am in a bad mood, I would have some chocolate. It always picks me up right away.
2. Have you made any desserts or cakes?
Actually, I once tried to make cakes. My cousin taught me how to do that, but it was an epic failure. I was too careless and the cakes tasted really weird.
3. What desserts do people in your country like?
Actually, people in my country do not like desserts. In traditional Chinese meals, desserts are usually not a part. The dishes we like are usually pretty salty.
4. Do people usually have desserts after dinner?
As far as I know, people in the West usually have desserts after dinner while people in Asia hardly have this habit. So I guess, it varies from region to region.
PART2
Describe a person who taught you something
You should say
Who this person is
What he or she taught you
How this person taught you
And explain how felt about him/her
My mom taught me cooking when I was about 14 years old, and I'm still grateful that she did. It turns out that cooking is really important in my life. When my mom first talked to me about learning to cook, I was actually reluctant to do it because I didn't think it would be very necessary. I just thought that it's really convenient to order in nowadays. But my mom told me that learning to cook is actually incredibly important because food cooked in restaurants may not always be very clean and healthy.
My mom was actually a very good teacher. She taught me cooking step by step. Firstly she took me to the supermarket and taught me about grocery shopping. Then when we got back home, she taught me how to prepare ingredients and how to properly use different kinds of condiments. Over a period of about four months, she taught me about 20 dishes. She had always been very patient. She explained how it worked every step of the way, and when I failed and got frustrated, she always gave me pep talks to encourage me to try again. Now I can cook pretty well and I have actually fallen in love with cooking. Because of my skills, I can cook myself various healthy and tasty dishes, I can cook for my family and friends which, by the way, is pretty fulfilling.
What’s more, being able to cook by myself also means that I do not have to eat out or order out regularly, which saves me quite a few bucks. So I am very grateful that my mom taught me how to cook.
Describe a time you helped someone
You should say
Who you helped
How you helped him or her
Why you helped him or her
And explain how this person benefited from your help
At the end of last semester, all the students in my class started working on the paper. The deadline was approaching and everybody was really stressed.
Well, I had quite a lot of inspirations, so I didn't have much trouble writing things. Mostly importantly, I started off the work pretty soon, so I was able to finish the job with the sufficient time I’d got.
But it was a different story for my roommate. She got stuck. She just had no idea what to write in her paper. She felt like she couldn't produce anything. She went to the library every day and sat there for hours, looking through a ton of books. And yet she still could not write anything. She was so upset that she told me what was bothering her. I then offered to help her.
I first recommended we have an in-depth discussion about the theme of the paper. During our discussions, I raised a lot of questions, I challenged her arguments and my words actually inspired her. Our conversations got her thinking and eventually she got enough ideas for writing her paper.
Once she officially started writing, she was in need of many reference books, but she was running out of time. Considering how time-consuming it would be, I helped her get those books from the library.
Eventually with my help, she finished the paper before the deadline. She thanked me profusely for my help and even treated me to a nice dinner!
